chicken wire fence between our back yard and the neighbors property. it sat there most of time, but sometimes they moved it to the street. for some reason the front end reminded me of the face of a horse, despite the horizontal grill. i remember it was a flathead 6 and had a floor shifter-like a real truck. somewhere along the way, i learned that it was a 3/4 ton truck, which i thought meant it weighed 1,500 pounds. i never got to ride in it, but i did get a ride in an f6 flatbed which had the same cab on it. by the time i was a teenager, my stepdad always drove a pickup, almost always either a chevy or a gmc. oddly, i was a dedicated ford fan and found our neighbor’s brand new f-100 more to my taste. i remember my friend bill was real excited about his dad’s new truck and made sure i knew that although it was a six, it was still a larger motor than the 283 in my dad’s truck. and that it had a forged twin i beam suspension that was more rugged that what gm offered. i think it had three on the tree with overdrive. years later, my next door neighbor had a 90’s bronco with the same motor and a five speed transmission. i was amazed at both how much it sounded like the 65 ford i was familiar with and how much low end power it had. it would happily chug along at 1,500 rpm in 3rd gear around town and you’d only have to downshift when you came to a stop sign. recently, my wife and i had been thinking of getting a used pickup to use for trips to home depot and perhaps tow a small boat. my neighbor had just bought a 95 corvette, and thus had to thin the herd. he had a two wheel drive 1996 f-150 with the big 4.9 six and a 5 speed manual with an 8 foot box. i saw the for sale sign on it, took a test drive in it and agreed to buy it that very afternoon. the 1996 f-150 was the last year for both the 4.9 six and the twin i beam suspension in the f-150 (the twin i-beam carried on until 2016 in the f-250 and f-350) as ford introduced the 1997 model in february of 1996, so the 1996 was only available for a few months and the 1996 f-series brochure features the new 1997 f-150. as for the part about it being a time machine, that mostly falls on the engine. the 300 cubic inch six (it obtained the 4.9 metric designation in 1983) was probably the last american gas motor designed for low rpm operation. they never put the engine in a passenger car but did put it in medium duty truck (such as dump trucks) as well as various industrial uses, such as ski lifts, power generators, wood chippers, tractors, pumps, farm machinery and ups trucks. the big six has maximum torque output of 265 ft. pounds @ 2,000 rpm and maximum power of 145 @ 3,400. the current standard 3.3 six in the f-150 also develops 265 ft. pounds, but at peaks @ 4,000 rpm. it also makes exactly twice the horsepower, but at 6,500 rpm. both trucks weigh in at about 4,000 pounds so they have a similar torque to weight ratio, but the newer truck stops the old one with exactly twice the horsepower per pound. driving my truck is an experience not unlike riding a harley-davidson: everything works better if you short-shift and let the low end torque propel you along, i rarely seem to rev the motor past it’s power peak. until the 1950’s, pretty much all engines were like this. anyone who has ridden in an old car (pre 1950) will be familiar with the sounds and sensations. the other thing is the manual transmission, which is a rarity these days in most vehicles, including trucks. here are all the pickups you can buy new with a manual transmission: notice there are no ford trucks with a manual of any sort. just having a manual these days is a rarity. not only does it have a manual transmission but it comes attached to a 17 inch long shift lever that grows out of the middle of the transmission tunnel and vibrates along with the engine. again, prior to wwii, this is the way you shifted most cars and trucks, and if you’ve ever ridden in a driven a car or truck from the 1930’s, you’ll find many similarities with taking a ride in my truck. i will grant you that it has some modern features like power windows, steering and brakes, but riding in the front seat you could easily imagine yourself riding in a truck built 50 years (or longer) ago. i’m not sure just why i enjoy driving the truck so much, i guess because it’s so relentlessly mechanical in nature. after riding a series of sportbikes throughout the 80’s, i noticed my harley sportster was fun just to put along at 50 mph on some backroad without having to take every corner at some heroic speed and i found myself, at times, going slowly enough to actually enjoy the scenery. the f-150 is sort of like that. after all, if i need the sensation of speed, i have another vehicle that’s approaching antique status, with an inline 6 and a 5 speed, my 98 bmw z-3, which is a 90’s idea of what a 60’s roadster should be like. i’m starting to see a pattern, here. author fauxsuper posted on july 5, 2018 july 5, is a chart showing the 50 countries with the highest nominal gdp, ranked by size, with the largest at the top. the pink column is gdp in millions of dollars, the light blue column is population and the green column is gdp per capita. i ended up making this as i was looking at figures for the country of mexico after reading a piece about their new president. i happened to notice how similar the per capita figures are to those of both china and russia. per capita gdp is only a rough indicator of how people actually live, (and in some cases, such as vietnam, can be quite misleading) but conditions are likely to be similar if your countries are in the same “ballpark”. all three of these countries face major challenges with being able to raise substantial portions of the population out of poverty. notice that if you combine the gdp of the us and china, the resulting number is larger than the total output of the next 15 countries combined, giving you some idea of the economic clout they wield and the scale of their output. obviously, one can look at the above chart and draw your own conclusions, but i’m going to comment on the things i find sort of striking. it’s good to keep in mind that china had a national gdp of 4,600,000.00 us$mm in the year 2008, and although the rate of growth has slowed to around 6.3% from around 9.1% since then, it doesn’t take much imagination to understand it will soon be equal to ours within a decade or so, even if it continues to slow . the relationship between the us and china, both as rivals and trading partners, is going to be the most crucial one over the next few years. the second thing is, in economic terms, russia is a paper tiger. the size of the russian economy is considerably smaller than that of the state of california, which is approximately 2,700,00.00 us$mm. despite a fantastically wealthy ruling class, russia is a country with vast levels of poverty. putin’s power, such as it is, depends on the aging nuclear arsenal he inherited from the soviet union. one wonders just how aware mr. trump is of that fact. mexico is an interesting case, mainly due to the proximity of the world’s wealthiest nation just to the north. there is no other place on the planet where such a vast difference exists by just crossing a single border. make of that what you will, but anyone looking for answers needs to take that into account. the united states has a huge interest in promoting ec
